Otakar Lebeda (1877-1901)
21. 2. - 6. 5. 2018
The Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín and the Vysočina Regional Gallery in Jihlava continue their exhibit series that present important personalities from the Czech art scene at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. This particular exhibition is dedicated to the works of Otakar Lebeda. Like František Kaván and Antonín Slavíček, Lebeda was a painter who is considered to be one of the most talented students who attended Julius Mařák´s landscape atelier at the Academy in Prague. He was a painter whose artistic career and life came to a prematurely tragic end. He was a painter whose work was undoubtedly unique in terms of its content and scope and is rightfully ranked among the fundamental landmarks in the development of Czech art. Lebeda´s artwork displayed in the exhibition came into existence over the course of nine years. The showcase presented a selection of more than 50 pieces on loan from various public galleries as well as private collections. The theme of the exhibition follows the artist´s short journey from early realism to his moody landscapes, from his impressive paintings and final inclination to his expressions in figural motifs.
