Zlín Youth Salon

The Zlín Young Artists’ Salon focuses on the work of Czech and Slovak artists and is typically held once every three years. Like the “New Zlín Salon” fine arts exhibition, it builds on the tradition of significant cultural events that took place in Zlín in the 1930s and 1940s. Specifically, these were the Zlín Salons of Contemporary Art (held from 1936 to 1948) and the Young Artists’ Exhibitions (held from 1940 to 1943).

The first edition of the Zlín Salon of Young Artists, which took place in 1997, was organized in response to criticism that the New Zlín Salon, launched the previous year, featured mainly living classics—not only in terms of generation but also in terms of artistic approaches. While the New Zlín Salon (an exhibition intended for artists of the middle and older generations) was meant—at least in its early days—to be an objective “cross-section” of the art scene, the selection criteria for the Young Artists’ Salon were, in a sense, undefined—that is, more flexible. Despite this—or perhaps precisely because of it—the Zlín Young Artists’ Salon is the one that, of the two salons, continues more or less in the same form, with the same method of selecting artists based on consensus and the recommendations of the exhibition jury.
